Ahmadineyad incendia Irán

Los resultados de las últimas elecciones en Irán han desatado una ola de protestas a gran escala por el rechazo de la oposición a reconocer el triunfo de Mahmud Ahmadineyad, quien indicó que su victoria la obtuvo en las elecciones más gloriosas celebradas en su país. Por su parte, el líder opositor, Mirhossein Mousavi, ha señalado que las últimas elecciones son una farsa peligrosa que va a tener graves consecuencias en la vida política y social de su país.

Como era de esperarse, los iraníes que apoyan a Mousavi han salido a protestar en contra de los resultados que atribuyen la victoria a Ahmadineyad. El gobierno, fiel a su estilo, simplemente ha respondido de la manera que sabe hacerlo: con represión. La noticia de muertos y heridos, en su mayoría mujeres, ha trascendido las fronteras de Irán a tal punto que la Comunidad Europea  y Estados Unidos han expresado su honda preocupación por el futuro de dicho país.

Los hechos en Irán pueden observarse a nivel interno (social) y externo (político). El primero tiene que ver con el surgimiento de una fuerza interna que agita las banderas de la libertad, la cual está siendo negada y reprimida por el gobierno. El segundo es la amenaza que Ahmadineyad representa para la comunidad internacional debido a su insistencia en el programa nuclear de su gobierno.

La respuesta que debe dar la comunidad internacional tiene que ser sólo una: rechazo a un gobierno ilegítimo. Si un gobierno no escucha el deseo de su propio pueblo, si los derechos a la libertad de expresión y manifestación no se respetan, si hay un programa nuclear que amenaza la estabilidad y paz del mundo, entonces dicho gobierno debe ser derrocado. Esta postura puede parecer irrespetuosa de la soberanía que todo país debe tener para elegir su propio gobierno, pero la realidad es que la mayoría de las dictaduras en el mundo, con millones de muertos de por medio, se han sostenido en el poder por la actitud pasiva de la comunidad internacional. Se ha echado mano a la diplomacia contemplativa con los dictadores, en lugar de intervenir en nombre de la libertad y la justicia, y salvar vidas humanas de pueblos enteros que vivieron bajo el yugo de gobiernos opresores.

Los verdaderos demócratas deben alzar su voz en contra de cualquier dictadura, y si las elecciones en Irán no fueron transparentes, las Naciones Unidas debe abogar por un gobierno de transición que convoque a nuevas elecciones con la supervisión de observadores internacionales. Sólo así se podrán garantizar unas elecciones limpias que expresen la voluntad del pueblo iraní.

The results of the last elections in Iran have unleashed a wave of large-scale protests due to the refusal by the opposition to recognize the victory of Mahmud Ahmadineyad, who indicated that his victory was obtained in the most glorious elections officiated in his country. For his part, the opposing leader, Mirhossein Mousavi, has pointed out that the last elections are a dangerous farce that is going to have serious consequences on the political and social life of his country.

As it was to be expected, the Iranians that back Mousavi have gone out to protest against the results that attribute the victory to Ahmadineyad. The Government, faithful to its style, has simply responded the way they know how: with repression. The news of dead and wounded people—women in their majority—have transcended Iran’s borders to such an extent that the European Community and the United States have expressed their deep concern for the future of the aforementioned country.

The events in Iran can be observed at internal (social) and external (political) level. The first one has to do with the surging of an internal force that waves the flags of freedom, which is being denied and repressed by the government. The second one, is the threat that Ahmadineyad represents to the international community due to his insistence upon the nuclear program of his government.


The response that the international community should give has to be only one: reject an illegitimate government. If a government does not listen to the desire of his own people, if the rights to freedom of speech and protest are not respected. If there is a nuclear program that threatens the stability and peace of the world, then said government should be overthrown. This position can seem disrespectful of the sovereignty that every country should have to elect its own government, but the reality is that most dictatorships in the world, with millions of dead people in the middle, have maintained themselves in power due to the passive attitude of the international community. It has resorted to contemplative diplomacy with dictators, instead of intervening on behalf of freedom and justice, and saving human lives of whole nations that live under the yoke of repressive governments.

The true Democrats should raise their voice against any dictatorship, and if the elections in Iran were not transparent, The United Nations should mediate for a transitional government that calls for new elections with the supervision of international observers. Only that way could clean elections that express the will of the Iranian people be guaranteed.
